A Good Time to Be a PR Pro—
In our previous PR News Salary Survey report, we noted that the economy was still in a state of flux, and that layoffs and budget cutting were affecting the PR industry—and its professionals—in a big way. Indeed, the study found that nearly 30% of respondents did not receive a salary increase in 2010, and half worked at organizations with no bonus plan.
Cut to this year’s Salary Survey: The economy appeared to be getting back on track—with a reduction in layoffs across industries—and fewer people on unemployment lines. Within PR, studies showed that budgets were up, the focus on digital/social media was driving more hiring of communications pros and agencies were seeing an increase in business. Optimism abounded, yet it appears that the more things change, the more they remain the same—at least for now. Key Salary Survey findings (see Chapter 1) show that in 2011, close to 40% of respondents did not see a salary increase, and bonus plans remained elusive as well.
Still, we believe that cautious optimism should be the prevailing attitude. And that’s where the Salary Survey comes in—as an informative tool that assesses just where you and the PR industry stands.
